(XIN) 25 political parties registered to contest Cambodia's
2003-05-17 09:31 (New York)

July election
PHNOM PENH, May 17, 2003 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Twenty-five political parties have registered on Saturday to participate in the general elections on July 27, Cambodia's National Election Committee (NEC) announced Saturday.

NEC has finished to accept the applications from political parties at 5: 30 pm on Saturday, NEC's Director of Legal Aid Service Department Keo Phalla told reporters.

Among the 25 registered parties, only 5 were formerly approved by the NEC on Saturday, he said. The five political parties are Prime Minister Hun Sen's ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP); Cambodia Free, Independent and Democratic Party; Khmer Soul Party; Cambodia Development Party and Free Democratic Party.

The other 20 political parties, including the royalist FUNCINPEC party headed by Prince Norodom Ranariddh and Cambodia's largest opposition party Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), will be examined later by NEC, he said. The FUNCINPEC party submitted its application on Thursday while the SRP was on Saturday.

NEC will take five days to examine the application forms from the political parties, and if the political parties don't have enough document they must submit more within seven days, or these political parties will be disqualified from participating in the election, said Keo Phalla.

At the same time, NEC Spokesman Leng Sochea said that there are fewer political parties registered to participate in the election because some political parties don't have enough fund to conduct electoral campaign or some have not enough candidates.

There are now about 50 political parties officially registered in the Interior Ministry, according to local newspaper's report.

Each political party needs 41 candidates and 15 million riel ( about 3,750 US dollars) to put in national bank before they apply, he said.

In the 1998 general elections, there were 39 political parties contending for the 122 seats of the National Assembly.
