Hun Sen: Government has reached final stage of approval for anti-corruption law.

Apparently to assure donors that have endured a lengthy wait to see Cambodia ’s anti-corruption law finalized and enforced, Prime Minister Hun Sen on Tuesday announced that the government has now reached conclusive stage on the legal instrument, newspapers report.
“I would like to confirm that the anti-corruption draft law, which has been developed under comprehensive discussions, is in its last stage of thorough consideration among the Royal Government’s relevant institutions before the Royal Government examines and adopts it, [and] forward it to legislative institutions,” Hun Sen said during a government workshop at Phnom Penh’s Chaktomuk Theater, reports Kampuchea Thmey.

The government failed to approve an anti-corruption law in 2006 as it promised to do during the annual meeting with development partners earlier the same year, notes Cambodge Soir. Ambassadors of Cambodia ’s major donor countries reminded Hun Sen about the promised law during a meeting in early February this year that focused on future allocations of international aid.

During the workshop, at which governance action plans and public service polices were publicized, Hun Sen acknowledged that fighting corruption plays a vital role in good governance.

“In the governance sector the main priorities are to encourage and speed up the fight against corruption on various battlefields including legal and judicial reforms, accelerated implementation of public financial reforms, public administrative reforms, and more effective decentralization,” he said, according to Rasmei Kampuchea.

To bolster governance and public services, Hun Sen said: “We need government functionaries who try to serve the interests of people on time in an effective and efficient manner,” reports the Khmer-language daily. He added that the government has a program that offers high salaries and bonuses to government functionaries for good performance.
