Cambodian opposition welcomes PM's olive branch

PHNOM PENH (AFP) - Cambodia's opposition party has welcomed moves by Prime Minister Hun Sen to end a long-running dispute with political rival Sam Rainsy.

Party leaders said they hoped the apparent reconciliation would see the exiled opposition leader's conviction on defamation charges overturned.

Opposition lawmaker Son Chhay said an exchange of letters between Hun Sen and Sam Rainsy marked an important step towards reconciliation.

"The exchange of letters is the first important step to the general compromise," Son Chhay told AFP.

In an abrupt about face, Hun Sen said he hoped his fiercest political rival could soon return to Cambodia after Sam Rainsy Friday recanted accusations that the premier was behind a deadly 1997 grenade attack and other violence against his party.

Sam Rainsy fled for France early last year after being stripped of his parliamentary immunity.

He was sentenced in December to 18 months in prison for defamation, in part for accusing the premier of orchestrating the grenade attack, which killed at least 16 people at an opposition rally.

Hun Sen, of the ruling Cambodian People's Party, has been accused by foreign critics of trying to crush the opposition through either violence or criminal lawsuits.

Sam Rainsy's conviction and the jailing of opposition lawmaker Cheam Channy drew international outrage from rights groups and foreign diplomats.

In another apparent detente, Hun Sen Thursday successfully petitioned King Norodom Sihamoni to cut Cheam Channy's seven-year prison term by four years, making him eligible for a full royal pardon.

M.PAGNACHON,

Bonjour Monsieur BAC,

Bien cordialement.
